Working Together: Examining Employment, Education, and Training Strategies for the Jamesville, Beasley, and Keith Neighbourhoods began with the Neighbourhood Planning Teams in the Hamilton neighbourhoods of Jamesville, Beasley, and Keith identifying challenges in employment, education, and job-skill training among their residents. 

This six month research project was led by Mohawk College, Workforce Planning Hamilton, and the City of Hamilton's Neighbourhood Action Strategy.

Women at Work: Labour Market Snapshot of Skilled Trades for Women in Hamilton

An info-graphic was created as part of the information that was included in a booklet distributed to female high school students who attended Tech 2014 on February 25, 2014.  

Although there are over 21,000 employed people in Hamilton who have a trades certificate or apprenticeship education only 6,515 of those are women.  The ratio of men to women in the skilled trades in Hamilton is 3:1.

Listening to the Voices of Experienced Workers in Hamilton: Workforce Barriers and Solutions

As people remain in the workplace longer they face a distinct set of barriers to finding employment. This project entailed interviewing 20 experienced workers (people 45 years of age and over) to discover their barriers to employment.  A literature search was carried out to discover what research has been done in the past regarding barriers to employment for this group.  

A call to action is included with recommendations for the future.

During the six months since Workforce Planning Hamilton (WPH) released our 2013 Labour Market Plan new data has become available through the National Household Survey as well as a special data set that profiles job seeking clients accessing Employment Ontario services and programs. With this new information along with updates to other labour market indicators we have prepared a brief report that explores workforce trends in Hamilton with a special emphasis on Hamilton’s workforce and job seeking clients.

National Household Survey 2011 Data Release

Hamilton’s agricultural sector has grown to a $1.3 billion industry and provides great opportunity for the city's businesses and labour force. The City of Hamilton Economic Development Strategy identified agribusiness and food processing as a key cluster for business advancement.

Workforce Planning Hamilton prepared this labour market profile as a guide to the employment and business opportunities within the cluster, as well as an outlook on the future employment prosperity of the industry.

With an increase in employment of over 10% between 2007 and 2012, the health care sector is one of the Hamilton CMA's (which includes Burlington and Grimsby) fastest growing areas of economic development.  This report includes an overview of the broad health care sector in Hamilton, information on ambulatory health care services, hospitals, and nursing and residential care facilities.

This report outlines the most prominent occupations in Hamilton's top 10 industries.  Provided is information about the required skill level, median income and outlook for future employment for each occupation.  

Information from the 2006 census provided the basis for much of the report, as it provides the most comprehensive data.  To identify more recent trends, Local Labour Market Indictors derived from Canadian Business Patterns (June 2011), Labour Force Survey (2010) and other Statistics Canada sources were also included.

Non-participants are people not working and not actively seeking or available for work. There are approximately 34,000 people age 25 to 54 in our region who are not in the labour force. The people in this group come from a variety of educational backgrounds, though those with only a high school diploma or less comprise 55%.
